The 13U Kangaroos produced one of the great Warrandyte Netball Club comebacks, overturning a five-goal deficit in the final quarter to win the 2023 Autumn grand final 17-15 against the undefeated Panthers Stars.
It was the club’s only premiership of the season, but what a way to win it. The Stars had finished on top of the ladder without losing a game and had beaten the Kangaroos three times during the regular season. With all six of WNC’s other semi-finalists eliminated, the club’s hopes rested entirely on one team.
Trailing by three goals at three-quarter time, the Kangaroos reached deep, shooting seven consecutive goals in eight minutes to snatch victory. Coach Amy Graham had spent the season building her team’s belief in themselves, knowing it would be just as important as fitness and technical skills. The comeback proved her right.
The season also saw the club’s team numbers growing after several years of COVID-related disruption, with two new opens teams joining the competition.
