2004 Spring season premierships

The Eagles have landed

It didn’t match the success of last year, which produced five premierships, but
Warrandyte Netball Club did themselves proud again in the Doncaster and District spring finals.

Ten of Warrandyte’s 19 teams made the finals and six advanced to the grand finals on December 4. Only the Open B Eagles went all the way but it wasn’t for lack of dedication and desperation all round.

The Eagles certainly flew high. They were undefeated on their way to the grand final and much too good for Koonung.

It was 10-8 our way in the first quarter and one-way traffic thereafter, Warrandyte ignoring the heat of the day to double Koonung’s score. 44-22.

The other outstanding grand finalists were the Under-13/2 Wallabies coached by Lauren Reid and Caitlin Hurst. They’d finished third as 13/3s in the winter season and were similarly placed on the way to these finals.

Perhaps big-match nerves took over after a spectacular win in the semi-final, but they were grand losers (16-9 to Koonung) and their dedication couldn’t be faulted.

The 15/2 Rosellas, winter-season grand finalists upgraded but depleted by an injury to a key defender, were defeated 27-13 by DYC. It was always going to be tough against very strong opposition. but the girls, coached by Rochelle Roodhouse and Kelly Whittingham. fought it out all the way.

So did Amy Green’s 15/1 Magpies in their battle with DYC, the traditional rivals. Premiers last spring and runners-up in this year’s winter finals, they were determined to bring home another premiership but found DYC too good on the day and went down 33-19.

The 17/2 Ravens, coached by Maydeena Jamieson, finished second on the ladder and were ready to take on The Burners.

The game went right down to the wire and goal-shooting luck was on the side of The Burners, who got home by four.

Lorraine Green’s Open A Woodies had finished top of the ladder and faced arch rivals DYC, who had pipped them in the winter grand final. Revenge would have been very sweet, but DYC came out firing and prevailed by 10 goals.

The new netball season begins in mid-March and any girl interested in playing for
Warrandyte is invited to call Vicki Hassall for information.
